Testing Rod Bond & fiberglass tape

A few days ago there was a thread about Rod Bond that had not set after two weeks. This was under a reel seat that had used fiberglass tape as arbors. The poster also said that the excess Rod Bond set up so measuring/mixing problems were ruled out. Someone suggested that the adhesive contained on the fiberglass tape may have reacted with the Rod Bond possibly causing it to not set up under the reel seat. I was doing some work yesterday with Rod Bond and thought I'd run an experiement. I wrapped some yellow fiberglass tape (adhesive backed) on a scrap blank and coated with my left over Rod Bond. This morning all my spare Rod Bond had set hard including that with the fiberglass tape. I only used three layers of tape for the test bushing so I can't conclude how multiple layers of tape hidden under a reel seat might change the outcome.

I've used fiberglass tape for bushings in conjunction with Rod Bond for some time now and not experienced any problems.

"...so measuring mixing problems were ruled out."

Actually, they weren't ruled out. See the further responses to the thread. In fact, a mixing failure was the likely culprit.

Epoxies aren't generally affected by things like the adhesive on the back of the tape. You can probably introduce some sort of solvent or other product in sufficient quantity to foul things up, but in general, epoxies will set as expected in our reel seat assemblies if they're measured and mixed properly.

Probably some how he just got a bad mix. I have put rod bond on a glass coffie pot, inside. After over a year it is still working to stop a crack in the pot.
