Well I just completed my first fly rod, well completed enough to cast it. I haven't put on the butt cap yet. I decided to go out tonight just to see how it felt. This is a 6wt fast fly rod. Which I put 9 weight intermediate line on. Honestly I don't think it was the weight of the line that was the problem. But when casting (letting out line on a false cast) I have a loud whistling of my guides? or something on my rod. I tried covering the butt, it didn't help. But when I false casted without letting out line I didn't have the problem with the loud whistling sound. I am pretty sure you could hear this sound from 50 yards away. Someone please help!!!

Mike,
I have had this problem on other than fly rods with braided line that was under tension when reeling in the line. I don't really know but I suspect that what is happening is the surface roughness on the line is causing the guides to vibrate. What kind of line are you using? If I am right the noise should go away with a smoother line. Re: Whistling guides? First rod help!!!

These were single foot titanium guides. The line is a 9 wt Little Tunny 555 line Intermediate. I know it was way too much line but I just had to give it a try. Re: Whistling guides? First rod help!!!

Try a 5 or 6 line on it. Also try lubricating the line see if the noise goes away. Re: Whistling guides? First rod help!!!

If the line is a clear intermediate, it will quieten down when wet, I'll bet. Jim Re: Whistling guides? First rod help!!!

I usually clean my lines after every outing and in the middle of fishing a 4-5 hour Got to clean to get the dirt off . If it is an old line it is probably worn. Re: Whistling guides? First rod help!!!

I think the whistle is being under estimated. But I will switch to a 9 weight sinking line to see if it changes, if nothing changes I will borrow a friends 6 wt line to test. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
