ROD BLANK COLOR

HELLO ALL;
I'M NEW TO ROD BUILDING, AND HAVE FOUND IT TO BE AN ENJOYABLE WAY TO PASS TIME. I'VE BUILT A COUPLE OF RODS FOR MYSELF, AND AM ACUALLY PRETTY IMPRESSED WITH THE OUT COME SO FAR, HOWEVER I STILL HAVE A LOT TO LEARN AND PROBABLY MANY FUTURE QUESTIONS.
FOR MY FIRST QUESTION, CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THERE IS A WAY TO COLOR ROD BLANKS, THAT WILL NOT NOTICABLY AFFECT THE ACTION OF IT ?
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANK YOU.

Hi Mike- go up to the Search button and type in color or paint .

You'll get many threads, some of which refer to changing blank color, painting blanks, etc. There was a good discussion here just a few days ago (check a few pages back).

There are several popular methods in use but the bottom line is TEST ON A PIECE OF SCRAP BLANK FIRST !!! Some of the overcoats have a nasty habit of reacting with and destroying paint.

If you learn anything new and exciting, please post!!

To work on my painting/re-coloring, I stop at yard sales and pick up any old rods on hand. I do my experimenting and then donate them to a local charity that uses them in a fishing tournament for disabled kids. Many Boy Scout troops can also use functional fly rods for their fly fishing merit badge. Provides lots of practice and as a bonus, they are exempt from my wife's official "just how many rods do you need" count :)

Hi Mike,

As Pete stated do a search and you will find pages of info. Welcome to rod building. Most paint you apply to a blank will not effect the way the rod works unless you really put it on extremely heavy. Just a tip: @#$%& did a study a few years ago and it was found that most people will skip over and not read info that is posted in all capital letters. It's harder on the eyes to read.

Plus all caps is considered yelling on quite a few message boards, and many people won't respond because they percieve it as an "agressive tone" and may be looking for an argument. "Trolling" has other meanings when on other forums (I'm on a lot of motorcycle and gun type boards).

Back to the subject, I've seen a few rods that had been painted with the color changing paint that you can get from any WalMart (name escapes me right now). Didn't seem to effect the rod to their knoweledge.

be sure to post pics!!!

Jason

Thanks for all the info ,I will definately try the old rod experimenting.
I can probably find some old rods right here at home to play with, (My wife is pretty convinced that I have plenty of them), I'll have to do some digging around in the shed.

Pep boys Plasitc-Kote paint works very well. 2-3 light coats should cover well. They have any color you wany. They even have a clear to cover. I used Minwax spar varnish. Worked well. Hope this helps. Bill
