One good source to use is the mudhole.com catalog. You can download it and it will have good suggestions for numbers of guides and placements. Once you have them in the general location then it is time to do the static deflection test and you can custom place them to the rod. Six guides sounds a little too few to me for a 10' rod but I am an amateur so I could be wrong. Hope that helps

Eric, I just finished two 12' conventional surf rods, and am on my third. The first one had 8 guides plus tip, the second had seven guides plus tip. Your estimate for six plus tip sounds right. You may want to consider going up on the guide size a tad. I started with a 25, then two 20's, two 16's, two 14's and a 14 tip. 10 seems awful small for a surf rod, especially if you're using a shock line to cast. Just my opinion, but I favor the bigger guides for surf casting. I'd also consider underwrapping the guides. Good luck.
