Problem with Rod Bond

Last night I cut off a reel seat that I scratched up. It had been cured for about 2 weeks. I used rod bond and fiberglass mesh tape, so I really wasn't looking forward to takeing it off because I envisioned it being a real chore. Well I made a horizontal cut along the length of the reel seat with my dremal and cut-off wheel, and was then able to easily slip the reel seat from around the rod blank. The rod bond was not hard. I always leave my epoxies/rod bond in whatever I mix it in to make sure that it sets up, so I know that the excess did set up. What was on the blank was very rubber like, not hard at all. Anybody got any ideas as to what may have gone wrong? Re: Problem with Rod Bond

Most likely a bad ratio of resin to hardener, I've done it before also.
There have been a couple of guys who devised a syringe method for rod bond that sounded really nice. They basically got big rod building syringes and spooned rodbond to equal levels into the syringes, then you have nicely metered dispensing. I think I am going to do that myself. I would agree if the excess hadn't set up - but it did. Re: Problem with Rod Bond

Hi Clyde,
Did your fiberglass mesh tape have any adhesive of its own? If so possable some type of chemical reaction between the 2 adhesives??? I'm only guessing because you said the left over Rod Bond dried fine. Hank On The Rocks Fishing Wells, ME. Re: Problem with Rod Bond

Yes, & that's my first guess. Second guess is I got a lot of alcohol under the seat somehow during clean up.

Clyde,I used rod bond mixed with some white pigment to fill the holes on the side of my boat after I removed the loran antenna and it took 3 days to fully cure.Of course I assume the pigment was at fault combined with cool weather. Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: Problem with Rod Bond

Next time try the Flex coat arbors. easy to use. Epoxy in the seat, then bore out to fit the blank and epoxy onto the blank Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
