Is there any reason, other than the extra added weight, that Size E thread shouldn't be used to wrap guides on a flyrod? I'm thinking here of a heavier, size 7 or 8, flyrod.

I use A no matter what weight the rod is and it's more than strong enough. Re: Thread Size-Flyrod

It is quite coarse from a cosmetic standpoint for a flyrod. Stan Grace Helena, MT "Our best is none too good" Re: Thread Size-Flyrod

Dave,
I live in Alaska and build many fly rods every year. There is no need to use E on a fly rod unless you are building something for serious saltwater fish. I use A on everything up to and including 10 wts. I have never had a problem. I have considered going after Salmon Shark with a fly rod and if I do then I will use E. Unless you just don't feel like it for whatever reason I would use A. Unfortunately E just look tacky on a lower wt fly rod. Almost looks like rope was used. Re: Thread Size-Flyrod

I've never held a spool of size E thread and built trolling rods designed for 65# of drag. For private rods that are taken well care of I will use a single layer of size A on rods up to 50#. There is no need, except for personal preference, to use thread larger than A on any fly rod. Even a 19wt fly rod should be ok with size A thread I would think. My 'dink' fly rod is an 8wt...lol
