alright, I have discovered in a previous post that finding a short heavy weight fly rod is next to impossible.
What if I took a 9 foot, 9weight 5 piece rod and dropped the butt section. would the action end up being around a 7 weight'ish. Is there any way to have a really good idea of what the action will be other than to build it up and try it out? I need some good feedback guys. thanks, Shanon Re: dropping a section

There is no such thing as a 7-weight action - action is always fast, medium or slow or some degree on the AA scale. What you'll have, is a much slower action rod than it was originally. It will be less powerful as well.
If you have the blank, I'd run a CCS measurement on it full length, then drop a section and do it again. That will tell you exactly what you're going to have once you drop a section, both in terms of action and power. You can compare that to the full length version, or to something else you already have that you like and be able to tell how close dropping that section is going to get you. Personally, I don't think you'll like it, but at least with the CCS you can know beforehand what you'd be looking at in a finished rod with a section dropped. ............. Re: dropping a section

Shanon, I responded to your earlier post with some ideas - check it out. The FT blanks from Five Rivers offer a lot of promise for this type project. You can either drop a butt section or use a shortened butt section. And yes, the CCS allows you to find out exactly what the power and action will be before you built the blank. Go the CCS database and order the $4 articles so you know what you're doing. It's easy and well-worth your little bit of money to learn something very useful. Re: dropping a section

Shanon, if I were you, I would buy the FT906-4 or FT907-4 from Dan Craft. If you drop the butt section, you will have a 6'10" blank with about the right amount of power you want plus it will still be pretty fast action, actually faster than most fly blanks on the market. If you want the rod to be longer than 6'10", you can use part of the original butt section to get the total length you want. You will have a short rod with fast action good for throwing a 7 or 8 wt. line.

Get the info. With it you can meassure any section of the blank and it will let you know what it will be. You can also measure in different places of sections, say 2" from the tip, to see " before you cut " if it will work when cut. Post Removed

The Dan Craft rod is a good option. Also, you can CCS a spinning or casting blank in the length you want and try to find something with a power that will match up to what you want in a 7-weight. So there are several ways you can go on this.
