Everone at the place that I work knows that I build and refurbish Rods as a hobby.
Well one of the guys came up to me and asked me if I would refurbish a rod that is
his fathers. He told me that the female end of the ferrule had been broke off and lost.
He wants me to rewrap new guides on also. However we did;t go into detail on the rod
I just told him to bring it in and I would look at it. THat he did and what a shook .The rod is
really a mess, maybe it should be trashed but he wants to surprise his father, this rod
is a 1958 cherrywood rod.He wants to use eva for grips .The only part That I see might be
a problem is the ferrule for the rod is a little weak in that area or getting a furrule that size
to fit.Does anybody know of that rod and any suggestions.I really hated to say no.
Thanks in advance.

Berkley Cherrywood? I'm guessing the ferrules are metal? Neal Cissel may have replacements. I'd just replace both ends and be done with it.

Your biggest problem will be in getting paid what your time on that rod is really worth. It's going to be a lot more work than building a new rod, but there are many people who do sincerely want an older rod restored. You can certainly do it. Ferrules can be found and almost anything there can be replaced as long as the blank is in fairly sound shape to begin with.

I have found over the years that rebuilds tend to get you more praise than new rods. Everyone expects a new one to look good but on a rebuild they know what they brought you and when you give it back better than it was when new, that makes an empression and they sing your praises loud and clear. If done correctly it well be a praise to your workmanship. Which in turn well bring in more business to you. I would not rush this job. Go with Tom's idea about where to get the ferruals.

Jessy and Bob are right when they tell you that a job like that will bring you more . I recently finished a referb onan old glass rod for a guy, for his father . All of the people that that rod went through to get to me were overly impressed with the end result and have other "projects" that they need done . I think a total of 6 different people were on the chain to get the rod to me , they all passed it along on its way home to the owner . Referbs are a lot more work than new rods , but are more rewarding to the person who has the work done . Have fun , JHD
