stabilized wood at home?

I have been using nonstabilized wood and have had absolutly no problems. I have recently been using alot of balsa and have been making the wood hard as a rock by coating it with CA glue/superglue which really works great other than the fumes. Has any one here tried the stuff from wood crafters that you soak the wood in to in a sense stabilize it. Yes I know its not the same as Real stabilizing but I dont want the added weight or cost of real stabilizing. Regular wood works fine but I need to achieve a rock hard outer that isnt going to kill me. the last handle I coated was so bad it was smoking as I applied the CA glue.

What you're looking at there is a product used to keep the wood from checking and cracking as it dries. What I think you're after isn't really stabilized wood per se, but acrylic impregnated wood. This is the hard stuff that you can buff and which really wears like hard plastic in the out of doors.

There has been some talk of guys making a slurry from clear acrylic rod and acetone and then soaking the wood in that. The idea is that it will absorb the slurry. I haven't tried this but if the wood was soaked in solvent alcohol first in order to remove the resin, then I can see where the slurry might just be absorbed into the wood to some degree. It would be an interesting project to try.

Travis,
The best home brew I have seen is detailed in one of the tutorials at www.northcoastknives.com

Be careful not to blow yourself into the next county when doing this, but it actually does work really well!

Andy that was a great tip/link to share. I book marked that page on the stabilizing even though I don't own a lathe or turn wood grips. You never know what the future may hold & that is one interesting tutorial and a great idea. Thanks again!

Jay
