Someone been asking me about how to set up spiraled guides on a 13ft float rod. Anyone know of any books, or websites that might address this type of thing?

i have a question about this also.does it matter what side right or left to install the transitional guide? meaning if you use a left or right handed reel will it create any torque difference in the rod.every thing i have looked at and read i have seen them on both sides but mostly on the right.but found nothing in my search explaining why or why not.so when i built mine i did it on the right.does it make a difference?

Left or right does not make a difference... it is mostly personal preference.

The only time it really makes a practical difference is for non-levelwind reels... it makes sense for non-levelwinds to transition the guides to the opposite side of the crank... this way there is no pulling the line across the reel... just pushing it with your thumb and allowing it to work itself back again... that is if you offset your first guide by 20 degrees or so.

thanks. my first rod came out nice it is a levelwind reel.however the 20 degree first guide is a nice thing to know about non levelwinds.it may make fishings a little beter not having to push and pull as much.i think i am going to make another one to try out for albicore with my avet.oh yeh,sorry for the hijack but this info is nice to know.

I've recently been in the habit of putting the transition guides on the same side as the handle; the rod can be set down on the off handle side of rod and reel and it'll lay flat. With the guides opposite of the handle, it doesn't lay down very well or stow away in the rod locker nearly as well, either.
