Just picked up a DC matte blank. I plan on using the Gudebrod rod varnish on the rod for a glossy finish. My question is thus...do I varnish after all the guides are on or before?

There is no reason other than a cosmetic one to apply a finish to the blank. You will find it easier to apply prior to wrapping the guides but any finish other than the wrap finish will effect the rod efficiency in a negative manner. The effect may be modest but it will occur. Stan Grace Helena, MT "Our best is none too good" Re: Rod Varnish on Dan Craft

i am not sure of the hardness of gudbrod rod varnish but one problem that may occur if you varnish the rod before wrapping is the thread may tend to bite into the varnish and make it difficult to pack your thread properly. also, as mentioned before it will add weight to the blank and will slow it down. Hi again, Shannon! One of the coolest things about building your own rod is you get to make it your OWN rod! :) If you really want a gloss blank, Tronkak U40 Permagloss is the widely accepted best option for making a matte blank a gloss blank. HOWEVER, on your FRSIII61013 I'd just about beg you not to do it because the blank is just so sweet as-is, and applying finish will definitely effect the overall feel on such a light stick.
