reamer technique?

This is a rather strange question but is there some special technique to using a cork reamer? I was taught to use a file and rotate the handle as I filed away and have never used a reamer. I just build one and was curious if I should just do the same thing or is there a better way?
thanks,
Tom.

To keep the bore centered and concentric, you really need several reamers in different diameters. You need to keep the reamer close to the bore size - working a 1/4 inch reamer in a 3/4 inch bore is going to make things very difficult with regard to keeping the bore centered. You would want a 5/8 inch reamer in a bore that size.

A twisting/pushing/pulling motion is fine. Reamers cut in all directions whereas a file cuts in only one direction.

Tom , one thing that helps me keep the hole concentric to the grip is to roll the grip on a table with the reamer on the bottom( of the hole ) as I'm taking strokes back and forth . It really helps , as does using the proper size reamer as mentioned . Have fun , JHD

I have several reamers up to 3/4" in diameter. I chuck the reamer that incudes the ID of the hole I need to ream in a drill press and rotate the reamer under power while holding the cork ring in my hand. I carefully "walk" the ring up to the point where the hole is reamed to the desire dia. Its quick and using the right sized reamer makes it almost fool proof. Also works on already assembled cork grips.
