Flocking Question

Does anyone know how much weight flocked handles would add to a rod? Lets say a 9ft 7 wt fly rod with a 7 inch cigar shaped cork handle. I think it is approx. 1/8" that should be removed from the cork before appling the flocking so that would removed some weight. I'm thinking of flocking a handle for a fly rod but don't want to if it adds too much weight. Hank On The Rocks Fishing Wells, ME. Re: Flocking Question

The flocking won't add a tenth of an ounce. In fact, I doubt it adds a 20th of an ounce. It's a non-issue. You'd have to have pretty good scale to measure the weight difference between a non-flocked and a flocked grip of the same size and shape.
Don't remove or turn down that 1/8th inch, go 1/16th at the most if any at all. The shorter fibers just don't add that much extra diameter. ................... Re: Flocking Question

Earlier I reported that the adhesive was a urethane glue, actually as it turns out it's an oil based alkyd adhesive. But no, still not just an enamel paint. Nothing to do with the question here, but while it's on my mind I'll toss it in.

The only problem with alkyds is that they tend to crack over time due to the fact that they form a three-dimensional lattice at the molecular level while curing. Re: Flocking Question

Which won't be a problem considering how it's being used in the flocking operation. If we were talking about an alkyd paint, then cracking would be an issue to consider.
