Painting underneath guides

Well I was thinking of putting some pink thread as an overwrap for my g/f rods; however, upon a search I learned that I will probably end up with some black spots where the blank will show through. I also read that if I would paint the area under the guides the color of the blank will not show through. The rod is a sanded Shikari and I will be using black Alconites.

So my question is what type of paint should I use? and what kind of prep work is necessary? Also can I paint the guides so they will not show through?

Thanks

Johnny

I use acrylic paint that is available from any craft store (Michaels, etc.) I use masking tape to mark off the area to be painted. In my experience at least two thin coats of paint are necessary. I normally apply a coat of color preserver to the paint to prevent any bleed through.

You can coat the guide feet with any magic marker or Sharpie. I have also applied CP over that paint to prevent bleed through. Others may respond about their experience with/without CP.

Juan,
You can use NCP thread. I have done some rods with pink NCP thread with no problem. Some folks say that it looks more like paint than thread. I have never used paint on any of my rods and never will. Just be sure to pack the threads tight and you should not have any problem.
Later today, I will post a picture of a very old rod that I did with pink thread. I have had a terrible bout of vertigo due to allergies of pine pollen and haven't done anything that requires a lot of motion. I am way behind on my rod building. I can still tie flies but if I go outside to sand handles I am afraid I will fall over and get tangled up in the lathe. If I feel ok this afternoon I will post the picture along with some attempts at weaving.
Oops, I will use paint in marbelizing, something I have not as yet tried.
Cheers, Ellis

Yes you can paint the area under the guides Iv'e used common spray paint with good results. Just mask off the space you wish to paint, being careful of over spray, you can do the same with guide feet, and if the feet are filed or ground down shoot a little clear on them and then cover with the color paint you want, the clear will stop any "rust" from bleeding through, the paint color will "hide" any other defects.
