I have a friend who wants me to repair a split tip over butt ferrule. What would be the best way to repair this. Before someone suggests it, I have no access to Rodmaker Magazine. I don't have the money to pay for a subscription or back issues. Bill in WV Re: Repair Question - Tip over Butt ferrule

Bill,
Is it just the tip that's broke and if so how far down from the tip is the break/split?? Hank On The Rocks Fishing Wells, ME. Re: Repair Question - Tip over Butt ferrule

Hank,
Thanks for the response, didn't think I was going to get any for minute there. Is the female part of the ferrule that's split. It's the tip over butt type. Bill in WV Re: Repair Question - Tip over Butt ferrule

Bill,
Don't know how big the split is but if its very small I would rod bond it and wrap over it and epoxy over the wrap. If it is split a little worse try a sleeve of fiberglass from an old rod and wrap that and epoxy it. Be sure you use fiberglass and not graphite or it may split out. Good luck . Hi Bill,
That's good idea about the Rod Bond. Like Sam said if that does not work you will have to replace the ferrule, Again be sure to use fiberglass not graphite. If you use graphite it may change the performance of the rod. Hank On The Rocks Fishing Wells, ME. Re: Repair Question - Tip over Butt ferrule

does anyone here think there would be a place in this discussion for the use of fine kevlar thread? seems that would provide a lot of strength. also, remember when Heddon used to wrap guides with stainless steel wire in their "lifetime pal" series of rods. perhaps that is a useful material for this kind of repair. I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know how bad the split is. A family friend was over visiting my Mom, and my wife was showing him what I was doing and he ask if I could fix it. I would assume that its pretty extensive, because he said that when it happened he just pushed the tip section on further. DuOh!!!! Bill in WV Re: Repair Question - Tip over Butt ferrule

Larry,
I believe you are correct in the use of kevlar thread, couldn't hurt but more important to note is that in a custom rod we have the chance to correct these problems before the occur. I have always added a wrap to the female end of the ferule of any rod I do. This is something I have seldom seen on any over the counter rod even some of the high quality rods. If there is a problem with a rod to ferule fitting , it will probaly be the the female end as this is the weakest part of the ferule. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
