I'm thinking of trying the Madeira Thread and would like to know what are the major differences between this thread and thread from Gudebrod. So far my son and I have only used the Gudebrod NCP thread and metallic treads. Do you need to use color preserver on the Madeira Thread, where do you get it and a color chart? Re: Madeira Thread Use

You can order a color chart form the website for $. Their thread is polyester or rayon not nylon. Madeira thread can be purchased from their website or from most any higher end sewing store. I use the thread and using color preserver on dark colored blanks especially is a good idea IMHO.

Another question, do you use the polyester or rayon thread, and is the metallic thread good to use? Re: Madeira Thread Use

Use the Polyneon #40 , it's just a tad smaller than A thread, but make sure You use CP as there has been problems reported from those that have tried it with out CP (just ask Billy). Apparently there's a small amount of silicone used in the manufacturing of the thread to help it slide when used in machines. I'm also using the Polyneon # 60 in some of my weaves on small blanks , the only drawback to the # 60 is the color selection. Re: Madeira Thread Use

I have used the metallic thread for most of my hook keep/butt wraps and have no problems with it. The only thing to remember is to use CP on the thread. I also use high build,as the metallics have a rough surface after they are wrapped. I wrapped a small UL rod with the metallic thread on the guides and didn't have a problem.....yet.

Same here, Randy. I've used the Madeira metallics on several rods for guide wraps and haven't used CP-- haven't had problems yet. But I've heard too much from too many that I trust very much to not believe that there's a problem looming for me... Putter Williston, ND Re: Madeira Thread Use

Fisheyes, Mike. About 1 out of 3 spools (or so???) that are purchased and used seem to have terrible fisheye problems. Some have solved it by using CP all of the time; you know me and CP on guide wraps, though.
So far I've been lucky. Even when I've had fisheye problems in the past, I watch my rod finish dry to the end (my finishes are dry in 2 or 3 hours). I've been able to 'fix' fisheyes as the rod finish begins to set up by working the finish around, using heat, and then applying a second thin coat when dry. It doesn't get smooth so I use the second coat when this happens. Hasn't happened yet on me with Madeira, but I know that it will eventually. I've only done around 5 sets of guides with it. I've used it in trim bands on the guide wraps more than this, though. Putter Williston, ND Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
