Metallic Guide Wraps

I've used metallic thread for guide wraps on smaller rods, but I'm interested in doing a 30-50# saltwater rod. I would prefer to stay with size A, but I'm wondering about it's strength on a rod this size. I think I've read before that the metallics are as strong as nylon. If I were using size A nylon, I wouldn't be asking this question...maybe I shouldn't be anyway? Confidence in the materials you use is half the battle.

I've used Gudebrod HT A metallic for years on guidewraps, mainly the second wrap, with zero failures to date. I always coat each layer with finish also for strength.
Meant to add that all my rods are saltwater rods used for offshore fishing . Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/17/2005 12:08PM by Jim Kastorff. Re: Metallic Guide Wraps

I believe that the only thing I've seen brought up on the board on this involves wear. If the guide wraps on this rod might possibly be used where they can be abraded on railings, etc. then some consider using D thread. Other than that, A would be just fine from what I read here.

I am not sure but I think you could put 15wraps of any size A thread on each side of a two foot guide then put finish on it and have trouble pulling the guide off with a Pick up truck. Wear might be an issue but I am terrible about taking care of my personal tackle and once the finish is on, you really have to work on it to make it wear. IMO for what that is worth.

My first double wrapped rod is a 50 lb jigging rod. It has a Gudebrod HT size A underwrap, a coat of finish and then a Gudebrod HT size A overwrap.
I've not tested it already, but I wish this single size A overwrap will be enough. I'm not sure 100% but I'm confidence it will. Re: Metallic Guide Wraps

According to Gudebrod, the break strength on Nylon is 2.7 lbs. and HT Metallic is 3.5 lbs. That would make metallic considerably stronger that nylon. I don't know why this myth about metallic being weaker keeps going.

You Guys should see the Beautiful Bent Butt Acid/Spiral Roller Rod that Jay built for Steve Gustlin of All American Roller Guide. Steve Diplayed Jay's rod at the Long Beach CA, Fred Hall Show March 3 thru March 6.
The Rod attracted lots of attention and praise. If Jay lived in Southern Calif. he would get more business than he could possibly want. As the owner and Manager of his Restaurant, we don't know how he has time to do such high quality work. John Mantele Re: Metallic Guide Wraps

Thaks to everyone.
Mike, I've heard something along those same lines before (about the metallic being as strong/stronger than nylon). Was looking for some reassurance....Thanks! Jay Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
