Varnish and rubber cork

I thought I would ad a touch of class to the fiberglass rod I'm building and decided to varnish (marine varnish) the end of the handle like some bamboo rodbuilders do. The handle has a slice of tapered rubber cork ring as a finish down to the handle.
It looked very classy - even my wife thought so and she is just as much interested in rod building as I am in the latest fashion - and I was happy with the result.
That is until the next day when it was supposed to be dry - it wasnt ! It was almost as wet as then I put it on just a little more tacky/sticky. It was easily removew with some turpentine.

Can anyone explain what has happened ?

Thanks
Peter

Try two or three coats of permagloss. One nice wet coat will even do it. Or even thinned out thread finish.
Maybe it was bad? You did not let it dry long enough? To cold an area it was in?

Hi Bill,
I was varnishing some wraps and did the rubber cork at the same time using the same varnish - the coats on the wraps dried like they should.
The varnish was slightly thinned with turpentine and heated in a jar in boiling water. After removing the varnish from the rubber cork I inspected the rubber cork - no harm was done to the rubber.

Almost sounds like the rubber cork is at falt? I would not think so though. Weird. Maybe try some thing else?

I'm going to give it a try with some unheated varnish - maybe the heat did something to the rubber. Thanks for your thoughts Bill.
