flex coat arbors

i primarily construct stand-up/trolling rods used for tuna/sharks.....I have always used masking tape or glass wrap as a spacer for my reel seats and uni-butt ferrules and over the years have never had one bad experience. I either use rod bond (or 5 minute epoxy for uni-butts) and sometimes flext coat finish to glue together. After reading many post about the superiority of the flex coat arbors I am going to try them out. Are there any tricks to using them? and what preparation do you need to do to them other than reaming the pilot hole?

I don't want to side track my question, but what disadvantages has using masking tape have on the construction?....like i mentioned earlier...i build rods that take quite a bit of abuse, but I have never had a seat problem.

thank you

josh

Flex Coat arbors are a snap. Use them full length or cut into smaller sections. Drill them out with the Flex Coat pilot drill bits (or make your own with ). I'd be hesitant to use any type of finish as an adhesive. Lots of people use tape as arbors and have had no failures, but seat repairs I've done nearly always are a result of tape and /or adhesive failure, causing the seat to come loose. So far, no repairs on graphite arbors.

I would suggest putting the arbors in the reel seat first, then bore them to the desired size.

yes...thread wrapping finish.....it works great...it might just cost more than rod bond but i don't see any lack of strengh as long as you mix it correctly

I know that I can peel the finish off guide wraps with my fingernail, and the stuff is still flexible when I do it. I also know I've broken more fingernails trying to break apart cork rings or reel seat pieces for repairs that have been done with Rod Bond. My choice would be adhesive for gluing parts and finish for finishing thread. They will not serve the same purpose.

i'm all for experimenting and breaking rules and trying things not designed for its intended use, if it works just as good or even better than proven methods. for instance, mesh drywall tape. but in this case, i would rather use prove adhesive for adhesion, proven wrap finish for wrap finishing. there might be molecular science to this which would prove or disprove, but that's just me at this point.

good luck
