definition of power rating for rods

I understand "action" (Cabela's site has a good illustration of the differences in action) but I can't seem to grasp what the different "power" ratings are trying to quantify. Would appreciate a simple (if that's possible) explanation.

Thanks

How powerful the rod is, or how stiff it is compared to another one. Read the glossary page on this site for more info.

Keep in mind, that power ratings are relative only to each respective manufacturer. Outside of the CCS ERN figures, you can't cross reference power from one maker to another. A 4 power Loomis stick may be less powerful than a 3 power GUSA, for instance.

If Action is defined as where a rod bends, then the analogous definition of Power is how much a rod bends (when a load, such as casting a lure or fighting a fish is applied).

James,
If possible you should try to get the pamplet that Tom has published that explains the Common Sense System or get the past issues of Rodmaker magazine that explain it. With the Common Sense System you will be able to quantify both power and action and will be able to measure them very simply and easily.

doh Glossary! I read the FAQ and Library and searched but some how missed the Glossary - thanks. Also, have a clue about the common sense system and when I get up to speed I'll get the booklet, etc.. I am new to this and trying to learn how to select a rod blank that will give me the performance that I want. Not too stiff, not too whippy, all depends on what I am casting (I am mainly bait casting for muskies.)

Thanks!
