Im interested in starting to turn my own reel seat inserts.
I have access to a decent lathe, and may get one of my own if I really get into it. What are the essential tools needed to get started and what woods would be the easiest to learn with? I've come across a pretty interesting site with many burls to turn (future projects in mind already!) [www.hearnehardwoods.com] Thanks for your input. RB Re: turning reel seats

I was just coming on line to post this piece of information, and it might be timely for you. I just received a catalog in the mail called "Tool Crib", an amazon.com company. Customer service number is 1-800-884-9132. They have a Delta Midi-lathe advertised at $269.00, with an additional $30.00 rebate. 1/2 HP motor, six speeds. That's $239.00 net. Extension bed is $49.00. They also are advertising the Jet mini lathe at $249.00. Both worth looking at. But the Penn State Industries Turncrafter Pro is still a great deal. Plus you can get all your accessories there, as well. Re: turning reel seats

Get Andy's DVD before you do anything. It's the only thing available addressed strictly to rod builders. Re: turning reel seats

Steven....don't waste your money. Spend the extra money and get the Jet, Delta or TurncrafterPro. If you cant afford the extra money...save and wait until you can. A lathe is a tool you don't want to skimp on.

Robert,
I have also been considering getting a lathe for turning inserts and grips. Fortunately I was able to attend the seminar Andy Dear gave at the recent convention in Charlotte. He demonstrated the entire process of turning and fitting an insert. He explained each step clearly and in great detail. IO felt like I could have stepped ion and started working on one right there. I have not yet viewed his DVD on the subject but I am confident it will be comprehensive as well as easy to follow. Andy is a great teacher. Whether I get a lathe or not I plan top get the DVD just to increase my knowledge on the subject. To me Andy's advice is like gold. Take it to the bank! Re: turning reel seats
