Spliced vs. ferruled - bamboo

I found a UK rodmaker who will make a quad bamboo blank for me. Now I have to choose between a normal nickel silver ferruled blank and a spliced blank - the spliced is a little more expensive, but not much.

Does the spliced type offer any advantages over a normal ferrule ?

The blank is impregnated.

Thanks
Peter

I'm not sure what you mean by "spliced." Is this still a multi-piece blank? Normally I take spliced to mean more than one section has been permanently affixed to another.

my understanding is that the splice has to be taped when fishing. the scandinavians use these on some spey rods. personally i would rather have a silver ferrul so it is easier to take down. i also think the ferrul may be more durable. if you damage the splice i think it would be very difficult to repair. a damaged ferrul can just be replaced. having said all of that the splice will probably bend more like the rest of the rod. it will also be lighter. frankly, unless the rod has a lot of ferruls i don't think it will be a noticeable difference. if this is a two piece or even three piece i would go for the silver ferruls. by the way, there is a guy in argentina who builds gorgeous rods using a bamboo oversleave ferrul.

The spliced rods have tapered overlapping joints that are wrapped with thread/string or tape when you assemble the rod for fishing. I have seen and tried a few and they work just fine. Kind of makes the rod feel more like a single shaft when properly assembled. The overlap can be several inches to preserve the rod taper and assure a good fit. Splicing was the way longer rods were assembled before ferrules were available and they are still used today by some.

Ferrules would be quicker to assemble and disassemble. It's probably more a matter of your preferrence than anything else.

Thank you very much for your advice - its greatly appreciated - maybe for a lazy guy like me a normal ferrule is the best choice ;-)
