thinning CP

I want to thin some Gudebrod 811 CP. How much should I thin it? I was thinking 20% alcohol to 80% of the 811.

Will this work?

Thanks, Sean

Seane, thin it to where it runs. I 've been putting 2 coats of CP, a heavy soak & wick the excess off, let it dry, another heavy soak & wick off the excess. Get it to where it flows like warmed epoxy, not runny, not honey-ish.

20-80 sounds good, if the CP is thick. The ratio will depend on how thick the CP is to start. Try mixing in a seperate glass container, like a spice jar, or one of Rapt Tites glass test tube thingy's, this way you can see how thick/thin it is.

After having those disasters recently, I've been blotch free since I thinned the CP and applied 2 coats. Only problem I've run into is if you leave a heavy coat of CP on, crystals will form on teh thread, like dandruff, that's why it gets wicked off. Another tip - if you see teh brush getting "foamy", wick al that off, as the foam will not go away and it will show up under the epoxy.

I would not go more than 20% and even 10% sounds better. One problem with the 811, as good as it is at preserving color, is the tendency for it to be very inconsistent from the factory (Gudebrod doesn't make it). Some batches are fine as they are, others are terribly thick and heavy. You want it only thin enough to be able to apply it easily. Over-thin and what you'll be putting on the wraps is just alcohol, not color preserver.

Sean, my 811 was nasty thick and I hit it with about 20% maybe a lttle less. Put two coats on the triangle wrap thing and got excellent results when applying finish. When you up here I'll show you how thick my 811 is before and after thinning it. (even thinned, it still thick)

Thanks for the responses, guys. My 811 is on the heavy, thick side. I will try thinning it a little.

Mike, when I was up there last time, I did check out your CP that had been thinned, much better consistency than what I have. I did not see the un-thinned stuff, but you will have to show me when I get back up there.

Thanks again, Sean
