shipping charges revisited

I have read all the comments about shipping charges and have been through that issue before. When I call for an order now, I insist they tell me if it is in stock and how much the shipping charges will be. It is at a point now, that they give me that information and tell me what is not in stock and to call someone else. Kinda like Macy's sending me to Gimbell's. Also, I ask them if something is backordered whether there will be a shipping charge. So far, they have not charged me for a back order. I guess I have been lucky, but I have learned into my old age to ask every question I can think of that will avoid the problem. Sometimes I left out the right question and sure enough get burned.
