As a brand new rod builder, I am looking for some insights on a hand wrapper. I intend to build rods for family and friends and am convinced a good hand wrappr is more than adequate. As with all things, there are many choices. Sully's looks intriguing, for example.
Any & all advice is welcomed. Thank you, Greg Re: Hand Rod Wrappers

Take a look on the picture pages under equipment. There are tons of wrappers that folks have built themselves. That's what I did and I've only got @ $15 in my wrapper. I built it out of scrap wood I had, and some other hardware that was laying around. Just look at the pics and take the features you like and build your own. If you look in the library section above, I think there are even plans for building a hand wrapper. Save some money, build your own tools and equipment, and above all: Have Fun!!!!! I'm a teacher, and had some kids build me a wrapping stand in shop class. I just finished building my 50th rod on it. It's ugly and poorly constructed, but serves the purpose quite well. It probably has all of $5 worth of scrap pine in it. A good wrapping stand basically just needs to be level.

If you are going to build one, look seriously at adding some type of reverse tension device. It will make your wrapping much easier..... an old hack saw blade, tip up flag or a piece of wire on a spring will all work..... real easy if the thread comes over the top, takes an extra loop or eye of some sort if the thread come from the bottom on front...... If you are willing to buy a ready made hand wrapper I don't think you can beat the Sully. The stainless steel tension rods spoil you for working with others. I have a power wrapper that I seldom use with power for wrapping but I have converted the thead carriage to operate Sully style.
