HI Dick,
There is a huge amount of information on the board about it - Search for spiral wrap, roberts wrap, acid wrap, revolver rod - might also want to look for some posts about this by Brad Tharp or Rich Forhan or Ralph O'Quinn. There are several different methods fo setting this up. I think there is a new article coming up in Rod Maker also.

Most Bass rods set up this way use double foot guides for the first 3 or 4 transition guides, depending on the method, and the rest single foot fly type guides (6's or 7's) out to the tip. This decreases weight and in my opinion makes the rod more sensitive and perform better in feel and handling.

Long story short, once you have fished a rod like this I would guess you will never go back to guides on top. By having a quick transition and getting the guides on the bottom, you now have the guides where they want to be. It all but eliminates the twisting motion that a bait caster wants to do with the guides on top. This allows you to fight the fish and not the rod. It makes it much more comfortable to fish all day. No real difference in casting distance when properly set up. Try it I am sure that you will like it....

Dick,

I have recently seen a bass rod spiraled wrapped with one guide at 0 degrees, one at 90 degrees, and then the rest at 180 degrees.

The transition looked as good as the ones I've done using four guides.

If you are going to be in Charlotte this weekend, the rod will be on display. The three guides where around five inches apart to the best of my memory.

You may want to tape on the guides with the reel to be used and have a look. It sure makes it simple.
