I just finished one using the pearl braid with no CP on a black Batson rod. It turned a holographic green when I applied the epoxy. Very pleasant suprise. Used gold trim. This was my first attempt at a butt wrap. Very happy with the results. I got it from one of the sponsors on the left but they had to back order it. I don't think all sponsors have it in stock but can get it for you.
I read how to do this in Tom's book. I did not try to get fancy the first time out, but his instruction are very clear for a first timer. I was pleasantly surprised by the overall results. Ed Re: butt wrap question

It looks pretty good if you use it by itself. If you try to mix it with regular thread, it doesn't really work, as it's a lot thicker. Because of this, and it's width, you can't really do anything terribly detailed. If you are going for a rather simple look though, it's pretty decent stuff. Getting a level finish is the only bad part. Takes a little work.
Most all places I've seen it advertised are pretty close on price. Just a matter of pennies really. Re: butt wrap question

Works fine, with or without regular nylon. I use it with all the time no problems
Try a little on scrap and see if you like it Re: butt wrap question

Good stuff if used properly. On small bore blanks only one pass up and back on chevrons does fine. I like to put the braid on first so that the subsequent threads will break the color up. It will pack consistantly on a chevron but if you push back and forth on a diamond you can easily mess up the edges. Tension is one of the keys at crossings - too tihgt and you can not move the bands for adjustment. Do not atempt to burnish and CP displaces air from inside braid before finish. Packing should be done on a couple of side bands of A thread with a flat ended packing tool. If you try to move the braid with a tool applied directly it will fray. Do a search on Photos for LSU rods under my name and you can see the overall effect. Be careful and do not use too much in a pattern unless you also market sunglasses to your customers. Stay away from the Purple becauses it fades horribly in sunlight.
