This is probably a dumb question but: Does the direction the stripping guide mounts on a fly rod make any difference? One side has no supports on the foot and the other has two supports going from the foot to the ring. Which side should face the reel? Re: guide direction

It doesn't really matter as the line is only concerned with the ring, not the frame. But, most put the double foot to the rear and the single towards the tip. Others feel they can reduce line wrapping around the guide (I've never had this happen) by mounting the single foot to the rear.

I am completely neutral when it comes to orientation of the guide and let the person ordering the rod decide.
But will orffer my opion if asked. Personally I don t think it makes a difference. If I were making a rod for myself I would probably orient the guides with the two upport legs toward the butt end of the rod. Lou Re: guide direction

Jim - I have often wondered the same thing - if there was a right way? On the fly rods I have built I have done 3 with the supports toward the grip and one with the supports towards the tip. It looks OK to me either way but maybe a little better with them facing towards the grip.
