good morning everyone! Hi Tom.
well its been a long winter and its now time to build another rod. Im doing a glass 4wt and I came across an interesting post on a Knife making website. A thread was going about tru oil , one gent inparticular advised that not only does he use Tru oil on guns and Knives but he also builds Cane rods and he said he uses Tru oil as a wrap finish on light weight rods. Tru Oil is a polymerized linseed oil (a varnish) I can see where it could give a nice result but many coats will be required. has any one tried this on wraps? I may do a test wrap or two tonight! Many thanks and happy wraps "John" Re: Tru oil for guide wraps.

have not personally tried it. i have been told that it has to be laid down in the thinnest of coats or it will aligator. i think it would be a good blank finish on cane but i think you would be better of with a good marine spar on your wraps. Re: Tru oil for guide wraps.

I tend to agree with Larry, but not having actually tried it on guide wraps I would like to see you give it a go and then inform us on how it turned out.

John,
I've used Tru-oil as a cane finish a few times, but always used a spar on the wraps. I always felt the spar was a more durable option. I've since moved away from Tru oil and use spar for both the cane and the wraps. Again, for durability (my perception?) but mostly because I like the nicer shine the spar has when dry...just a better look IMHO. Tight LInes, Tim Re: Tru oil for guide wraps.
