Tom Kirkman mentioned a device at the Rodbuilder booth that will be demo'd. What's the device? Is that what helps you align your spiral correctly? Tell us some more if you can, please, Tom.
Thanks. Re: Spiral Wrap Device

I think that it is a device to demonstrate the added stability from a spiral wrap. Guides are placed according to the rod, reel, etc. and there are numerous "styles" of spiral wraps, so I wouldn't think that a device to align the guides would be very helpful.

It's a demonstration device for rod stability. I wouldn 't think anything is necessary for setting guides on spiral wrapped rods, other than perhaps a section of small diameter rod blank for the O'Quinn set up.

I like O'Quinn's way to do it. His way of running a flexible fly tip section or an X-Tra light tip though the guides also works well. It almost sets the guides itself.
I am a ferm believer in that the ( shortist distance between two points is a straight line) ! Re: Spiral Wrap Device

The only time I've used a measuring device on a rod is when installing @#$%& roller guides. After you set the guides properly you MUST take an accurate measurement to know the angle when you go to wrap them later. I use the same Craftsman tool as in Hank's photo link above.
On the last spiral roller I built I set the guides with the rod flexed with 35# of preasure. After putting the blank back on the bench I zip tie the compass to the grip at TDC and rotate it around to find the angle of the two trans guides. After measuring the distances between the guides I start on the underwraps. The Craftsman compass gives me a more accurate, and more repeatable, reading than the paper compass included with the roller guides. For casting rods with ring guides it's more about the flow of the line rather than specific angles. Jay Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
