EVA camo grips

I want to build a camo rod for my brother and want to use the new EVA camo grips. I notices that the ID is 1/2" inch, and the blank that I want to put it on has a less OD than the ID of the grip. The catalog states that the EVA is 1/2ID or 3/4ID. Am I out of luck with this for a ultra lite panfish rod?

Thanks again,
Dick Murchison

You could build up the section where the grip will go with tape (or something) like you do with a reel seat. It would add some weight but the grip sections are probably not going to be very long on a small rod like that so it shouldn't bee too bad.

Thanks. The OD of the rod is just above 1/4". I would assume that at the butt, I would find a wide winding check to cover any hole?

I just looked on the mudhole website and the camo rear grip sizes are:
9" x 3/8" ID
9" x 1/2" ID
9" x 5/8" ID

and the camo fore grip sizes are

2" x 1/4" ID
2" x 3/8" ID
2" x 1/2" ID

If you have a big gap at the top of the fore you could use a hosel insted of a winding check.

Dick,

One other option on UL rods is to put the butt section into a larger graphite sleeve- cut down a section from a broken rod and shim up your blank to fit, then put the handle kit over that. This stiffens up the reel seat and handle of the rod, so you have less flex there. Just beware that this creates a possible break point at the edge of that sleeve.
