Rod bond and boiling?
Posted by: Jason Courtney (---.interwoven.com)

Was following an earlier thread that indicated near boiling of reel seats/grips does nothing to loosen them if applied with Rod Bond. I have a grip that has a bit of wobble that I'd like to remove and re-fit. Reel seat not yet installed. Has anyone had success removing a grip installed with rod bond by using heat or hot water?

Thx,

Jason

It can be done, but it can also be a pain. If your grip is already loose or ill-fitting, it might be a good candidate to remove with boiling water. Those that are properly mounted can be a bear to get off by boiling or any kind of heat.

Hello Jason
If the grip was put on adequately with Rod Bond adhesive there is slim chance of removeing it with heat. But it is worth a try. Be careful to not overheat the rod blank. A good rule of thumb is if you cannot hold the blank it is getting to hot. Try water at about 160 deg F for a good soak of grip and then try rotating the grip to loosen the bond. I assume we are talking cork grip? To get a good grip on the heated cork I suggest using a grey scotch brite pad or a rubber jar opener pad.

If the grip is "wobbling" you may have a thick bonding line and heat may work. Generally if epoxy is slow curing (and Rod Bond is) and heat applied at a temperature that will not melt the blanks adhesives, does not soften slow curing epoxy very much.

Another possible fix would be to "inject" some epoxy into the void between the grip and blank if possilbe.
Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot. Already on the lookout for some of the syringes mentioned in earlier posts. Not sure what method I'll try yet, but I'll y'all know how it works out.
