Dumb weaver question

Looking through many of the weaves, I've noticed alot of builders using size "C" backgrounds with size A , pattern threads. Why size "C" ? and not size "A". I'd try to look it up in a book, but gave most of them away.

Tension on the wrapping thread causes the thread to be thinner. As I recall it was about 8%. One way to keep that from distorting the pattern is to use a wrapping thread at least one size larger. Some patterns are designed to use a wrapping thread of the same size and others correct the distortion by adding wraps in the pattern at specific points. That's one of the reasons we do test weaves of our patterns.

I've always done all my patterns using the same size thread, for the past 5 yrs have done mostly weaves using A black nylon thread for the background and A HT metallics for the patterns.
I think the use of A for the background gives a smoother look to the weave cause the edges are naturally smaller that when a larger thread like C is used. Its the same reason I use only A for butt wraps and guide wraps, just gives a smoother look imo.
I don't seem to have any distortion problems with my patterns, may have to do with how the pattern is designed namely the size of the graph squares. If I use C with my patterns in A thread they get elongated.

I too use one size larger thread to wrap with because when I make a pattern on graph paper if I use the same size for some reason it looks a little fat to me. Personal preference I guess. I use B with A, and Both Jims use different sizes so it looks like it boils down to thread tension. I guess. We all seem to be happy where we are. Experiment.

Thanks for your responses. I appreciate it. Pretty cool that a few of the best weavers...weave differently. Experiment!!
