Hi John - I have never had a problem with HT on the guides but I usually use an underwrap. I just do the CP and finish the same old way. I dont know about 811. Got your letter yesterday and will send your stuff out on Monday morning. Thanks

I use metallics on 90% of my rods. No problems with it It's actually stronger. According to Gudebrod, the break strength on Nylon is 2.7 and HT is 3.5
I use CP to "lock" the butt wraps in place so they don't shift when I put finish on. Other than that CP isn't needed but doesn't hurt either. Wrap and finish the same as usual.

Curious, though. Why thin CP??? I noticed some people do that but I have never understood why. All that does is reduce the amount of actual CP that is penetraating the thread. Seems kind of counter productive to me.

John I still use Flex coat Cp. It isnt broke for me so I dont fix it.

Mike I thin my first coat of CP so it soaks deeper into the thread and avoids any bloching problems - but that is just me. I m still stuck in the stone age

I'm not! No CP needed at all on the metallic thread. It is my impression that the primary purpose of the CP is color maintenance. The metallics will maintain a high degree of brilliance without any CP. Air displacement is an additional benefit. Just do good wrapping with pack and no burnish. Start the finish on the end of the guide away from the ring so that the initial soak displaces any air under the foot. If you do not do an underwrap this will probably give your a stronger attachment point.

You can not work the surface, burnish, of the HT Metallic series thread without doing damage to the metallic wrapping. Some colors are worse than others, i.e., the red and black will not go through a thread tensioning device without major damage and you will need to use a spool tensioner with most of them. I use J Metallic thread which seems to have a more abrasion resistant covering. I am plagued with the Gold and have it in my dreams. I build mostly LSU purple and gold rods and the gold metallics get a workout on my manual turners. If you use the metallics you will need to insure that your guides are really ramped to thin edges to insure that the thread will not separate when loaded.

You can do some really neat things with the gold metallics. If you want to use it for an underwrap and use regular nylon on top, such as candy apple, the metallic under wrap really lights up the top color when no CP is used. There are a number of posts in the photo section of this style wrap.
