Labels over thread??

I have read a little about using Avery clear labels or clear decal film to make labels for rods. Can this be done over an underwrap? I am making a rod for my nephew that will be entering the Marines after the summer and want to do a small band of gold, a large band of blue, a small band of reed with a tiny bit of gold in the middle of it, another large band of blue and then cap with more gold. I then want to print the words "Semper Fidelis" with a gold star in between the words and place that label with the point at the top of the star in the middle of the middle gold strip. Is this feasible??? or am I just insane?

It will work fine. There are several of the board sponsors over on the left that make labels. Contact one of them and have them make the label for you. Then underwrap the area like you want to and put a coat of finish over it. After the finish is dry place your label on like you want it and let it dry overnight. The next day come back and put another coat of finish or two over the label and you'll be good to go.

thanks for the assistance. i also considered trying to do the swirl on both ends of the thread in red, white and blue. Or do you think this will be too "busy"?

THOMAS,
I DON'T THINK YOU CAN OVERSTATE YOUR PRIDE. I BELIEVE THAT IS WHAT THIS ROD IS ABOUT, AT LEAST IN PART. I SAY GO FOR IT.

Thomas, the design sounds great, but you may want to rethink the color of the star. I believe a blue star is displayed by families with a son or daughter in the military during war time. A gold star is a symbol of something much sadder. I have recently wrapped three rods with a Marine Corps theme. All came out great and I know yours will, too. My son and daughter's boyfriend both are in the Corps, as well as my son-in-law being a vetern Marine (as am I). I know he will love it. Please pass along the gratitude of our country and, as for me, tell him, Semper Fi"!

Jim, I will have to do more research on that then. Do you have any photos of the rods you made? Would love to get some ideas of what the finished product will be. I have been talking to Les from Inserts by Les (<---over there) about doing a foregrip and insert in bloodwood and burning the Globe, Anchor & Chain into the foregrip and his name along the insert.
