Put on my first fish decal (holgraphic kind with the black background). Had not ever used this kind before and was not careful enough during the trimming and installation. Ended up losing some of the black material along the edges so that some spots along the edges are silver/white colored. Any suggestions on how to fix before I put the finish on? I tried a small test section by just coloring over the silver area with black marker, thinking I could just seal that with a clear fixatiff type spray like I do on lettering. Wanted to see if anybody had better ideas.
Sure do like the clear background decals a lot better! Thanks in advance! Scott Hunt Thank you! Scott Hunt Re: Dealing with "black background" decals

Scott,
I applied some of these a year or so ago and had exactly the same problem that you have had. I tryed a magic marker on the edge with mixed results. I finally cured the problem by carefully applying a little black acrylic paint to the edge of the decal. Re: Dealing with "black background" decals

Scott- Emory is correct one of the problems is most magic markers show up as a dark purple when used on the edges-you need to find one that is true black or use flat black testors on the edge. The trick with those decals is they must be trimed with a razor blade on about a 45 degree angle this allows the black to cover the white edge

John,
Cutting the edge at a 45 degree angle sounds like a great idea. i wish I had thought of that. Do you get any flaking of the black of the decal on the edges when you do that? Re: Dealing with "black background" decals

Emory- no flaking Bill Whiston who started that style of decal use to give demos on applying them only not enough people saw the demos once you learn how it becomes quite easy

Guys,
Thanks for the help! Man, somebody could retire early just by writing a book full of tips, tricks, what to do/not to do, etc. with regards to rod building. I guess it's more fun to use this site! Scott Hunt Re: Dealing with "black background" decals

Try India ink, the kind that comes in a bottle with a rubber bubble squeeze top on it. Rub it along the edge and let dry, cover with your favorite epoxy and enjoy the all black decal around the edges. Re: Dealing with "black background" decals

Cutting that a black background decal or any decal like that can cause the tramping of air all the way around the edges. If that occurs, you will see what looks like a white hair where the air is. Just a precaution, it does happen from time to time. Re: Dealing with "black background" decals

In reference to what Jimmy posted one item that can be a big aid is a simple roller-using one it can apply considerably more even force then trying to push them down with the fingers- Jimmi just started to carry these a good investment for all peel off decals Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
