I use a 9 1/2 casting rod for fishing a float and the butt of the handle catches in my clothing or my vest.
The handle needs to be shortened about 3-4 inches to solve this problem. What is the best proceedure to cut the handle, and reduce the dia. of the cork to replace the butt cap? Raft-Cat Re: Shortening End of Rod Handle

With a cut off wheel or fine toothed saw, just trim the rod to the desired length. Use some masking tape wound around the blank as a straightedge. Then, figure the depth of the butt cap, use masking tape as a straightedge again, and use a file or sandpaper to shoulder the end of the cork so it fits the butt cap.

I usually chuck the rod in the rod wrapper, spin the rod at a fairly good pace, apply pressure with an exacto knife at the point you want to cut off. Hold the knive steady with both hands. When the exacto knife hits the blank, stop and remove the cork. Then cut the blank with a dremel tool. After that, shape the end as Tom has mentioned above. If you have an inside calipar, you can get the depth of the butt cap and mark the cork so you know how far up the cork you need to go for a proper butt cap fit. This method works well for me.
