811 consistency

i opened a new bottle of 811CP and at 80deg. is thick as syrup. is this normal for it? did a bunch of test wraps and in every case the flex coat gave much better results, ie: no splotching. to be fair to the 811 though, maybe it is old or?? to be that thick. have read many posts against thinning 811 so used it straight. let it dry for 6 hours, was 80 deg. in workshop. thanks john

John,
I had the same problem with 811. I got splotching on a test so I thinned some after the first coat dried. I went over the first coat with the thinned portion and it caused the first coat to gum up. I have not tried it since. Maybe the heat in our area dried it out.
Cheers, Ellis

Yesterday at the NE Rodbuilders gathering in MA, we used very thick 811 that was thinned 20% with denatured alcohol with great results on a closed wrap with Madeira thread. Flexcoat CP, Glasscoat CP, and MinWax Polycryllic were also used with decent results...the thinned 811 (thinned, two coats) seemed the better of the four after applying finish. In the future I'll be thinning my 811 "molasses" with denatured.

I had to thin mine to use it when I inlayed some feathers with it; just too thick for it to do it's job. But a bit of thinning and it worked just fine for me. Haven't had a repair in to try the new bottle on yet, though, so I haven't put it to any thread yet.

I bought a bottle of 811 and it was syrupy too. I poured a little in an epoxy mixing cup and thinned it about 15% with alcohol, and it soaked into the threads well. I then used a second coat which was also thinned, let it dry overnight, and when I put the first coat of flexcoat lite, it turned out great. I like the 811 better than the flexcoat cp, so I will probably use it from now on.

I've thought about switching. I always use the flex coat CP but have heard good things on the gudebrod type.

Any thing that is thined goes on better, CP or Epoxy. It penitrates the thread better. Just use more coats and let dry well!!

Try not to go over board or you will have to use even more coats to get any pigment on the threads

It is somewhat different; I used isopropyl to thin my 811.

John: Denatured alcohol is ethanol (booze) deliberately cut with methanol (wood alcohol, very toxic) so that it's not potable. Isopropanol is similar, but not the same, slightly weaker in solvent effect for some things, but will mix with the 811pretty much the same, will evaporate just a bit quicker.
