I built a small alcohol burner with a cotton wick. I am burning 91% isopropal alcohol. What is the proper way to use this to burn the fuzz off the windings. I keep getting soot marks on the blank. Re: Alcohol burner Technique

I've only used denatured alcohol - run of the mill hardware store variety and have never had soot deposited on the threads. Re: Alcohol burner Technique

Martin - I'm guessing but I think the wick is your problem. 91% alcohol should burn clean. As far as building and using a home made alcohol burner I would not do it. For somewhere around $10.00 you can buy one that would be safer and with denatured alcohol you should not get any soot Hank On The Rocks Fishing Wells, ME. Re: Alcohol burner Technique

Switch to denatured alcohol and it should fix most of your problem. Even 91% isopropyl alcohol burns pretty dirty.

Use the side of the flame instead of the tip of the flame. Holding the flame under your wrap allows soot to rise up to the wrap. You also increase you chances of scorching the thread with the flame held under the wrap. Using the side of the flame makes it possible to use a bic lighter so that you don't have a constant flame going while you are wrapping. Thomas F. Thornhill Re: Alcohol burner Technique

The best alcohol torch I have ever used is built by Buffalo Dental Tool MFG., Syosset, NY, 11791. I don't know if they have a website. It has a squeeze botle and a tip to direct the flame in a pin point. I use denatured alcohol, and never have soot. Ask your dentist for help finding a source locally. They aren't expensive, and work great. Re: Alcohol burner Technique

Anglers Workshop (left column) sells the Buffalo Alcohol Torch for around $10.00 I have one and use 99% isopropyl alcohol in it and it works great. As mentioned "It has a squeeze bottle and a tip to direct the flame in a pin point". It works great for popping the bubbles that form on the guide feet on the inside below the ring. Just make sure your wick is very short 1/8" abobe metal tube. Also, if you squeeze the bottle to get a pin point flame make sure the flame does come directly in contact with your finish. It will burn your epoxy. Use a practice blank first if you have one. I do not get the black sute with mine using 99%
