I have refinished a few rods before including painting the blanks. In doing this I have found Permagloss doesn't like certain paint formulations. Spar urethane has been my way around this delimma, but I feel I would get better and longer lasting protection with Permagloss. What brands or types of can spray paint is compatable with Permagloss? I know some of you take blanks to auto paint shops for color & clear, but I like doing the work myself. Just looking for what paints Permagloss won't melt away. As always, thanks.

Jay, I've found most any of the paints for auto touchup will work with permagloss. Just be sure and let it cure before applying the finish coat.

Anybody tried putting a coat of spar urethane as teh first coat and then coat with permagloss?

I have been playing around with painting blanks and painted an old spining rod that I stipped with green Rust - Oleum Paint for Plastic in a spray can. The original color was a silver gray, I turned the rod by hand and sprayed from about 10 inches away. After letting it dry for 24+ hours I buffed it with a Scotch Brite pad and applied a coat of spar urethane to about half of it and left the other half with only the paint. The area coated with the urethane can't be scratched with a finger nail or a dull knife blade but I can scratch the uncoated area with just my finger nail. I did not try any permagloss and don't know if it would really be needed on top of spar urethane, might give it a try though to see the results.

All in all it looks good. One note of caution, don't spray inside the house, there is considerable overspray and the vapor is not good for ones health, it contains toluene, acetone & xylene.

I have used the Rust-Oleum Mettalics and they do look great. Permagloss melted these away like butter-pecan on an August afternoon. Switched to spar urethane and all is well...I just have durability/longevity questions about the spar.
