Wire guide to Single foot insert guides

Ceramic guides are measured from inside to inside of the frame. So, the thickness of the ring can cause the actual inside diameter of the ring to vary. Generally, you can count on the ring reducing the available opening by about 2.5 to 3mm. So a #7 ceramic guide will have an actual line opening of about 4 to 4.5mm. (Which is plenty large for all but the very heaviest fly lines.)

I just finished the book "Start to Finish Fly Rod Building" from Flex Coat, which I received in the mail today. They have a great guide section which list spacing. wire guide, and single foot w/insert guides sizes by rod length and line weight. If you are looking for good reference material, I would highly recommend this book. Re: Wire guide to Single foot insert guides

Also: for snakes, the Brits use a different measuring system than the Americans. Hopkins and Holloway are very big over there, and have a chart at their site. any search engine will give you the URL for H&H.
