SCIII vs. Rainshadow RX6 & RX7

Howdy All,

I am just curious how those who have experience with these blanks would rate the Rainshadow RX6 & RX7 as compared to the SCIII. I am partial to the SCIII blanks, but have heard that they are being discontinued. Does anyone know what St. Croix plans to replace the series with? I appreciate your responses. Thanks.

I'm with you Steve, I hope it's just a re-tool like the SCIV blanks. Haven't tried any of the new Rainshadows yet, the old RX7 were heavier in weight than the SCIII blanks I used, with the same line and power ratings. The Rainshadows really hold up well, have some customers that have really put the RX7 fly and spin/cast steelhead blanks through the ringer, so far no problems and they just love them. They've beat the hardware up pretty bad, but the blanks are fine.

Rainshadow are now producing an RX7+ and RX8+ blanks. These are available only in fly blanks. They have some carbon scrim and are very light in hand. I test cast them both at the Conclave and they are sure to be winners, I think the SCIII blanks are going to be retooled this year.

If we're talking fly rod blanks then I just built two 8'6" 4 wt fly rods in December, one was the RX7 in olive green and the other was the St. Croix SCIII. Both fine rods but the RX7 is a little faster action which I really like. I also found the same characteristics when I built both in an 8'6" or 9' 5 wt. (can't remember) but maybe not as much a noticable difference.

The word on the SCIII blanks is that are being redesigned and will be built with the IPC technology.
