Hi,
I'm re-wrapping a split cane blank with silk thread and wondered what type of finish, I should use. I have some permagloss - would this be OK or is there a better alternative ? Thanks in advance. Glen. Re: Finish for split cane

Go to the sponcers list on the left and click on Golden Witch. They deal in split bamboo rods

Glen,
The most commonly used finish on bamboo is tung oil based spar (yatch) varnish (not the urethane variety). One of the better spars is made by Epifanes. Good luck. Eden Re: Finish for split cane

varnish is the traditional finish. mcloskys man o war in the RED can is a high tung oil varnish that is used by a lot of bamboo rod makers. it requires about five thin coats on wraps. it will make the wraps go transparent and you will see the guide feet and all of your thread tags so keep that in mind unless you are going to use a color preserver. some folks on the bamboo board have been using flexcoat in a first thin coat to fill the wraps and then varnishing over that. same effect as straight varnish but much easier to remove in the future. you can find the mcloskys at ace hardware. don't use the green can.
