At what rod diameter would it be best to switch to size D thread instead of Size A.?

I use size A thread for all guide wraps regardless of blank diameter. Because A is smaller, you can get more wraps per inch versus D which, in my opinion, results in a more secure wrap. On larger blanks (surf, offshort, etc...) I may use a size C and/or D as an overwrap.

I generally use D thread on saltwater boat rods and surf rods. A for everything else. Re: When to us "D" thread

A and D probably have near exact same strength. I used D for many years on everything but switched recently to A just for looks in pictures; most fishermen looking at a rod don't see the difference. The few that do notice it like the A quite a bit better...

If A gives you the shakes, you ought to try wrapping with Pearsal's Gossamer silk. It's smaller than 6/0. It's all I use on bamboo rods. Re: When to us "D" thread
