I'm building a Loomis HS1025 rod and am using the static guide placemet setup for the first time. Everything looks good with 10 guides, plus the tip, but I'm concerned that the ferrule falls right between guides 8 and 9. Should I adjust to get one of them closer, or do you think it will be ok. This rod will be use on some big chinooks, I hope, and I don't want and surprises at an inopportune moment.
Thanks Steve Re: guide spacing help

Steve. Personally, I put guides on the ferrules first. Static distribution after that with the rest of them. You might end up with one extra guide on the blank. Re: guide spacing help

I've seen comments on the board before about putting the guide right on the ferules. Is the reasoning behind this that the strain on the blank is less at the point of the ferrules than in the space between the ferrules. A little technical explanation would help us all understand the reasoning behind this. Thanks much Richard Re: guide spacing help

Richard. My reasoning runs as follows: 1. You have to wrap the ferrule anyway. 2. The ferrule is a natural hardpoint on the blank (less strain). 3. The guide is relatively inflexible compared to the blank, so why not put it on the hardpoint. 4. It flat looks better when assembled, like a 1 piece rod. These advantages are so obvious I am surprised that a rod would be assembled any differently. There may also be a nifty engineering advantage, but that is not my field. Re: guide spacing help

Thank you very much.. Your reasoning makes a lot of sense. I will certainly give it a try on my next fly rod and let you know what I think. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
