How would you know if you are wrapping your guides to tight? and if you are doing this could it harm the rod?

You should be able to easily move the guides for the purpose of alignment, however they should not so loose that they will not stay where you want them to be.When a rod bends it needs to change shape(goes from round to oval)to facilitate the bend.If the rod is not allowed to do this due to the thread being too tight the blank can fracture at this point.
