Cleaning rodblank

I often have a problem getting rid of sticky masking tape residue from my blanks.
Specially when the blank has been sitting for moths with the guides taped on.
I have used rubbing alcohol to clean with, but it doesn't do a very good job.
I'm afraid that if I used acetone it would damage the surface of the blank.
Is there a better cleaning method, what can I use?
Secondly what brand and kind of tape causes less of a mess if the tape is left on for a while?

There's a product called "Desolv-it" that you can buy at Walmart that is really good for removing gummy residue and it won't hurt the blank finish. Blue masking tape leaves less of a residue , but even it is only good for about two weeks. You might want to try Flex Coat guide foot adhesive, or tiny rubber bands or surgical tubing. There isn't any masking tape that I know of that you can leave on anything for months and not have problems.

Goo Gone is another brand that works well...available almost everywhere.

I agree with Gerry, loose the masking tape and try small strips of rubber or surgical tubing. It is easier to re-position the guides when adjusting the spacing. You can get the different sizes of tubing at most hobby stores, cut into thin strips depending on the size of the guide I've only built a few rods, anfdthis method was much easier for me. Hope this helps,
Murf

If you have to use masking tape use the 3M blue tape, does not leave a residue like regular tape.

Thanks for the suggestions.
By the way does the blue tape come in 1/4" size?

What you will find in a hardware store is 1" wide but if you go to a auto supply store they have detailing tape starting at 1/8" and up

I sort of missed the part in your first about the tape being on for months. Don't think any tape should be left on for over a week or you will have problems.

Most people don't know it but plain VINEGAR desolves most tape and paste type glues.
Just soak some into a paper towel and wrap that around the sticky part for a minute or so
and the goo should wipe right off?!
