I am getting ready to build a 11'3" casting rod for steelhead. I ordered a 14'" cork handle - typical for an 8 to 9 foot rod. Do you think a longer handle is needed for good balance on a long rod like this? Possibly around 16"? Thanks for your advise. Re: handle length for a long steelhead rod

I float fish steelhead for the most part with a Rainshadow 1263. It's got a 14 inch rear grip but I also put on one of the hard foam butt caps, kind of like the crutch style. It sets nice on your belt when you float fish and I like the way it hits on my elbow if I'm holding the rod up high. Tend to use it for leverage when I cast. I like long rear grips but not sure I would ever go longer then 14 inches for river fishing. Re: handle length for a long steelhead rod

Steve P,
I would agree with Steve E. Usually the length of the handle is more a function of the length of your arm and what is comfortable for you not the length of the rod. I would not go to one as long as 16" unless you are very tall or have long arms. Re: handle length for a long steelhead rod

Thanks, gentlemen. I am comfortable with the 14" handles on my 8' to 9' rods - seems to be the right length for me. I will stick with that for this next rod. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
