What advantage is there in placing guides directly on female ferrules on 3, 4 or 5 piece rods as opposed to a nice progression of gradually increasing the distances between guides from tip to butt??

Stress on a rod blank is greatest between any pair of guides. By placing a guide on each ferrule you hope to keep that area from experiencing as much stress as it might otherwise. However, unless you simply far too few guides, with great distances between them, it's unlikely you would have a stress situation that would put your ferrule or your rod in danger.

John,
Like many things in rod building it is a trade off. On the one hand, you do not want to put any more guides on the rod than is necessary to distribute the stress because of the negative effect of the weight of the guides, thread and epoxy. On the other hand, you should wrap the ferrules so why not try to kill two birds with one stone and wrap the ferrlule with a guide. If you static test the rod and the placement of the guides comes out close to the ferrules putting the guides on the ferrules can result in less added weight overall. The lower overall weight will result in higher resonant frequency which will result in higher tip velocity (longer casts) and better sensitivity or feel.
