Hi guys and gals,
I've got a customer who is requesting a fly rod,5/6 wt, made from fiberglass.
A quick check of the sponsors brought me up short on suppliers. Could anyone out there shed alittle light on this subject for me?

Thank you very much in advance for I really appreciate your help.

good wraps,
David A. Fuller

Mark Steffen of Steffen Brothers Fly Rods in Flagstaff, AZ. He does not regularly offer a 5/6wt. in fiberglass but late last year, I told him I was looking for an 8' 5/6wt. 3pc. He said he didn't have one but he could make me one. Well, he did and it is outstanding. If you like the old Fenwick 8' 5 and 6wt. Fenglass rods from the 70s and 80s, you will love it. It has about the same amount of power as a modern day graphite 4wt., but it can flat out cast with that wonderful fullflex, smooth delivery. His blanks are a similar color to the old brown Fenglass but with an unsanded spiral texture, like an Orvis Superfine. Spigot ferrules, S-glass, perfectly straight, he is a master of detail and perfection. I highly recommend him and his blanks.

Do a search for Steffen Brothers Fly Rods and you will find his website and contact info. Hope this helps.

Steve

By the way, mine CC's at 3.42/67. He does not design his blanks for distance casting and tells you this up front and on his website. On the other hand, I have no problem putting 50 ft. of WF6-F Cortland 444 on the water with this rod, which is as much as I ever need. I bought it for my favorite fishing - streamers, poppers, and nymphs for panfish and bass.

I think Bob McKamey at Custom Tackle has the yellow Lamiglas blanks and they make a 5 or 6, probably with a similar amount of power to the Steffen I have. Isn't it funny how for decades bamboo and fiberglass rods with ERNs in the 3-4 range had no trouble satisflying anglers using 5 and 6wt. lines, whereas now, if it isn't in the 5-6 range, many right it off as unuseable with these lines.!

Unless they have stopped Lamiglas makes some nice glass blanks. Diamondback makes glass blanks called Diamondglas. Have used the Lamiglas, have not see the Diamondback.

look at the lamiglass 8' 5wt. E glass, so probably a slow rod. custom tackle has them in
2 pc, 3pc and maybe six pc.

Angler's Workshop also carries the Lamiglas glass blanks and is right next door to the plant. I thought they were S-glass blanks though.

David - I have also been thinking about building a fiberglass fly rod. Mudhole - who is a sponsor - has them. I think they have an 8' 5 wt. Made by Lamiglas.

I never thought I'd come close to buying one, but I flexed a Diamondback Diamondglass blank on Saturday at the MD show and nearly left with one more rod than I needed...I think it was a 8' 3wt.
